Engineered hardwood Tongue & Groove installation instruction

IMPORTANT: Colour variation occurs with all natural timbers. The quality of our boards is exceptional in appearanceand trueness. Proceed with a visual inspection of the boards before installation. Once installed, the boards are consideredaccepted by the installer and the home owner. Please read the entire installation instructions before proceeding with the installation owner/installerresponsibility

Hardwoodis a beautiful and unique product of nature, which is characterised by distinctive variations in grain and colour both within each board and from board to board. These natural variations in colourand grain are not flaws, but are a part of thenatural beauty and uniqueness ofhardwood flooring. These inherent variationscould be expected and serve to enhance thenatural beautyand enduring charm.

Hardwood is manufactured in accordance withaccepted industry standards, which permit a defect tolerance not to exceed 5%. The defectsmay be of a manufacturing ornatural type. It isunderstood that;
• The installer assumes all responsibility forfinal inspection of product quality. Thisinspection of each board should be carriedout prior to installation. Carefully examinethe flooring for colour, finish and qualitybefore installing. Use reasonable selectivityand hold out or cut off pieces with glaringdefects whatever the cause. All suchinspections should be conducted in finishedlighting conditions, particularly in areas thatwill be exposed to sources of natural light.
• Before beginning installation of any hardwood flooring products, the installermust determine that the environment ofthe job site and condition and type of thesub-floor involved are acceptable, ensuringthat it meets or exceeds all requirementswhich are stipulated in the Hardwood installation instructions whichfollow. We declines any responsibility for job failures resultingfrom or associated with inappropriate or improperly prepared sub-floor of job siteenvironment deficiencies.

• Prior to installation, the installer/owner hasfinal inspection responsibility as to grade, manufacture quality and factory finish. The installer must use reasonableselectivity and remove or cut off pieces withdeficiencies.

• Do not install sub-standard, nonconfirmingor faulty boards.

• The use of stain, filler or putty stick for thecorrection of defects during installationshould be accepted as normal procedure.

• Please note that hardwood flooringmust be installed in a regulated and liveable environment to prevent possible damagenot covered by warranty. As such, hardwood should not be installed morethan 2 weeks prior to occupation of thehome. The floor is designed to perform inan environmentally controlled structure. Warranty exclusions include, but are notlimited to surface checking resulting from low humidity, cupping or convexing (doming)of boards or the presence of mildew or discolouration from extreme sub-floormoisture or poor cleaning/maintenanceregimes.

Job site inspection & acclimatisation

• Hardwood flooring can be installedbelow, equal or above ground level.
• We do not recommend to install hardwood flooring in bathrooms, laundry, toiletsor areas subject to regular moisture or water.
• In a new construction, hardwood flooring should be one of the last itemsinstalled.
All work involving water or moisture(plumbing, acoustic ceilings, wall lining etc.) Should be completed prior to flooring beinginstalled. Heating and air systems should be fully operating maintaining a comfortableroom temperature.
• Flooring should not be delivered until thebuilding has been closed in and cement work, plastering, painting and other materials arecompletely dry. Concrete and plaster should be cured and at least 60 days old. Checkbasements and underfloor crawl spaceto be sure they are dry and well ventilated toavoid damage caused by moisture.
• Handle with care. Do not stand packson their ends.
• Do not store directly on concrete or nearoutside walls. Cartons should be placed in the installation area.
• Extremes in humidity levels in the homemust be prevented all year long.
Hardwoodflooring is a livingproduct which reacts to humidity levelvariations. During summer, where thehumidity level is usually at its highest point, the Hardwoodflooring is expectedto expand as it absorbs moisture from the air. These variations must be dealt with adequatedehumidification. As for winter, when theheating system is working, the humidity levelis lower. It is then recommended to use ahumidifier to minimise the extreme effects ofshrinkage.

Installation

When installinghardwood, werecommend the following installation tools -
Expansion wedges, a pulling iron and a tappingblock. You will also require a PVA glue, jigsaw, pencil, hammer, tape measure, knife and small hand tools associatedwith wood working.

Step by step installation instructions

Hardwoodflooring is installed asa ‘floating’ floor. That is, that the panels arejoined together via a Tongue and Groovesystem to each other and float over anapproved underlay and damp proof.

A successful installation will rely heavily onstrict adherence to these instructions. The two most common causes of failure are unevensubfloors, and inadequate expansion to the perimeter of the floor.
An uneven sub-floor may lead to movementof the flooring underfoot and within the joining system, resulting in excessive noise, whichoften sounds like ‘cracking’ or ‘creaking’.

Preparation:

The first thing that you need is to ensurethat the sub-floor or surface that the flooringis being installed over is level. Using a 1mstraightedge, the sub-floor level should notexceed 3mm over 1 lineal metre in anydirection. Remember, uneven floors may leadto movement and noise, so it is necessary toassess the levelness and get it right. Timberfloors can be sanded level and concrete floorsor existing floor coverings can usually belevelled using a cement based self-levellingcompound. Hardwood flooringcannot be installed over carpet or carpet underlay but can be installed over well bondvinyl, cork or ceramic tiles if sufficiently level.
Before installing any floor, a moisturelevel measurement of the sub-floor is veryimportant to know so that we can choose thecorrect installation procedure(s).
If the moisture level is above 70% relativehumidity as measured by an approvedmoisture meter that complies with the current ATFA codes, you must first installa 200um minimum plastic moisture proofmembrane or sheeting. Where the membraneedges meet, they must overlap by 300mm andthe joinsmust be sealed using a waterproof tape.
All walls and vertical fixtures must have themembrane turned up and then trimmed back to the appropriate level dependingon skirting and/or beading to be installed.Door frames and architraves should beundercut prior to commencing installationusing a scrap of flooring and a long flexiblehand saw. Work out the trims to be installedas some trims are easier to install prior tothe flooring. This will be dependent on thedirection of the trim to the flooring and thetype of trim to be installed.

Installing the First Three Rows:

Select a starting wall that is long and visible, the first three rows will be installed parallel to this wall. Install the first row of plastic and/or underlay as required then install the first row, groove (female) to the wall to assessthe straightness of the starting wall. If the starting wall is undulating or uneven squarethis row off to the other side of the room using a tape measure and scribe the first rowof boards to cater for the undulations while accommodating a uniform expansion gap. Interms of the required expansion/contraction gap, low humidity environments, will requirea gap of 5-10mm.Regions where the humidity is generally stable, a gap of 10-12mm will berequired. A gap of 15-20mm may be required in high humidity regions.
Expansion generally occurs in the width of aboard. If the installation area measures >10 metres in width, expansion joins must beinstalled. This reduces the overall width so the floor now becomes compartmentalised, allowing now smaller areas to move independently of each other thereb reducingfloor growth or shrinkage problems.
Hardwoodmay grow by over 3mmper lineal metre in the width, so make sure youleave enough gap to allow for such expansion.
The wider the floor, the bigger the gap that maybe required.
Now lay the first row directly against the wall.
Apply PVA glue into the groove, then gently tapit in to the next board. (we will space off the first three rows later).Cut the end board and leave the correct gapthat is required: 10mm is a rule of thumb. Fit asuitably sized spacer at the start of the row toset the gap required.

The off-cut from the last board in the firstrow now starts your second row, providing it’s longer than 300mm. If not, a new board willneed to be cut to begin the second row. Now install the first board of the second row, applyPVA glue in the groove, and then gently tap it in. Continue installing the floor left to rightusing the off-cut from row 2 to begin row three.
(Note: Remember to ensure that you staggerend joins by greater than 300mm.) Any small gaps present can be filled using a caulkingcompound in an appropriate colour. We can now slide these three rows off the starting walland install the itably sized spacers against the starting wall.

The Body and the Final Row:

Continue installing the floor from left to right. The final row will need to be trimmed to fit using a jigsaw and brought into place using apulling iron. Remember to allow an adequate gap for expansion at all walls and verticalsurfaces. This gap will be covered last of all.

Finishing Off:

Where skirting boards have been left in place,it is now time to fit colour matched scotia mouldings to the perimeter of the floor tocover the expansion gap after removing the expansion wedges. Scotia is to be pinnedto the skirting only so as not to inhibit the free movement of the floor. If skirting boardshave been removed or are yet to be fitted, they will usually cover the expansion gapwell. It is often the case where professional installers will also undercut the plasterboardto afford an additional 12mm or so expansion to the perimeter of a floor. This is oftenrecommended on areas of higher humiditywhere the flooring is likely to expand more.Install any end, connector or adaptor profilesthat have not been fitted during the installationprocess. These trims must hold the floor inplace and provide for full and free expansionof the flooring under or inside the trim profile.
Finally, any gaps at the floor perimeter thatcould not be covered with skirting or profiles, can be filled at this time. Your hardwood Flooring can now be cleaned and enjoyed

Engineered hardwoodClick systeminstallation instruction

Preparation:

Engineered Oak flooring must be acclimatised onsite and in its original packaging for at least 2 days prior to installation. In winter, this should be extended by a further 2 days prior to installation. Never open packs until the day of installation. Flooring should be installed when conditions are between 15– 22°C with a relative humidity of 45– 65%.
The subfloor must be hard and level. The temperature of the subfloor should be at least 15°C but never exceeding 27°C. Carpet etc. must be removed before installation, but there is no need to remove an existing damp proof flooring, for example PVC flooring.
It is always recommended to use our “Performance Plus Underlay” with the installation of Engineered Oak Flooring. This underlay comes with an integrated damp proof barrier for extra subfloor moisture protection.
Only In-slab hydraulic heating will be considered under warranty provisions. Other heating methods are not covered by our warranty. Ensure that your heating system is run at anticipated operating levels for a period of no less than 2 weeks prior to installation. The heating system should then be turned off and the subfloor left to cool for three days prior to commencing installation of flooring.
For best results, installation should be carried out with the heating system turned off 24 hours after completion of the installation, the heating system should then be turned on and the temperature increased gradually over a 7-day period until the normal operating temperature has been reached.
When installing a floor with an under-floor heating system, the moisture-content of the cement based concrete sub-floor must not exceed 1.5% (CM %), or 0.3% (CM %) for anhydrite. The surface temperature from the underfloor heating must not exceed 27°C and the wattage should not exceed 60 watts/m2.
Use of a 200uM Builders plastic must be used on all heated or moist subfloors. When using a plastic membrane make sure all edges are securely taped with at least a 30cm overlap. Use of a vapour tight tape is mandatory. Make sure you allow the plastic membrane to cover the entire floor area and run up the walls by 50-70mm (excess plastic can be trimmed off after installation). Please contact your retailer for clear instructions if in doubt.
A new concrete floor must be dry at least 1 week per cm in thickness. Slabs over 4 cm should double the drying time. That is a 4cm slab should be dry for 8 weeks.

Installation:

Make sure the subfloor is flat, clean dry and firm. Any variation in height greater than 2mm over a running 1 meter needs to be levelled.
To install in Click you will need the following accessories. Pulling Iron, Spacers, Tapping Block, Underlay, Saw, Pencil, Safety Goggles and Gloves.
In the case of gluing Flooring directly to your existing subfloor, a suitable parquet adhesive must be used. Direct gluing of your Oak Flooring is a complicated process. Please contact your retailer for more information before carrying out this procedure.
Please check floor panels prior to installation, panels with faults or defects should never be installed.
Claims regarding visible defective material must be made prior to installation. Each plank should be inspected to ensure that the quality is acceptable. No claims relating to surface defects can be accepted after installation.
Make sure you mix floor panels prior to installation, this will help insure a random variation of colour and wood grain throughout your oak flooring installation.
It is important to properly measure the floor before installation. This will ensure that plank placement throughout the floor is visually acceptable, you should also maintain that the last row of flooring installed is at least 5cm wide.
Check that doors can open and close with adequate clearance, allowing for the thickness of flooring and underlay.
Engineered oak flooring is not suitable for known wet areas, this includes installations in bathrooms.
1, Install the first plank with spacers packed between the plank and the wall. Ensure the expansion gap is 12-15mm.

2, Use a soft rubber hammer to ensure the drop lock profile is properly engaged prior to installing the next plank.

3, Continue this process until the wall is reached.

4, The offcut from the first row can be used as the first piece of flooring for the next row. Please ensure the 12 -15mm gap is maintained throughout the installation and ensure that the stager between rows is at least 15cm.

5, Click the second and remaining rows together rotating the boards horizontally at an angle of 20–30 Degrees. Gently tap the end joints into place using your rubber mallet. Ensure joints are staggered by at least 15cm.

6, Make sure that the width of the last row is at least 5cm, and ensure that the gap around the perimeter of the floor remains at 12 – 15mm.

Always lay wood flooring lengthways against the longest wall of the room. In rooms where the flooring is longer than 12m, and where widths exceed 8m, the use of an expansion joint is required. Always remember to use expansion joints (e.g. at doorways) throughout the flooring installation, particularly between rooms.
If the client objects to the recommended use of expansion trims at time of installation, we recommend the installer keeps on record that the client did not wish to use such trims.
Fill expansion gaps with the use of a suitable profile or skirting. Never glue profiles to the flooring itself, you must maintain free expansion around the perimeter of Engineered Oak Flooring.
Once you’ve completed your installation it is immediately ready to walk on.

General maintenance:

It is important that the floors room temperature and humidity levels are kept stable throughout its life in your house. The ideal temperature for a timber floor is between 18-20°C, with a relative humidity of 45– 60%. Maintaining a well-ventilated environment, are key in maintaining your Oak Flooring.
In winter months for example if the humidity (RH) in a heated room goes below the specified 45% this may result in plank changes. As such, you should install an Air Humidifier to prevent damage to your floor, also maintaining that the surface temperature remains between 18-20°C, but never exceeding 27°C.
Engineered Oak Flooring is not designed to be exposed to extremes of humidity or temperature. It is important to note that floors exposed to such conditions may fail. Sensible protection of the flooring from such extremes, particularly in unoccupied homes, must be afforded. Measures can include curtains, awning, blinds, window tinting, and early commissioning and/or regular use of air conditioning or humidity control devices. Protection of the flooring from any radiant heat source should also be provided, e.g.: around combustion heaters and other heaters, as these generate extreme low humidity. Engineered Oak Flooring should not be installed until these measures are in place, and should not be installed more than 2 weeks prior to occupation of the home. It is important to understand that any warranty, expressed or implied, may be voided if the floor is exposed to extreme conditions.
The same may also apply to Air-conditioned rooms.
A dry maintenance regime is generally recommended for your Oak Flooring. This includes the use of vacuum cleaners and regular sweeping. Use of dirt trapping mats at doorways are also recommended in reducing any abrasive wear, associated with foot traffic.

We never recommend the use of steam cleaners on Oak Plank Flooring.

Wet maintenance is not acceptable. When cleaning your floor always ensure that moisture is removed immediately by using a dry cloth.
Always protect your floor by use of floor protectors under tables and chairs.
Wood flooring is affected by natural and artificial U.V. light. This will cause colour change in wood flooring.
TIMBER IS A NATURAL PRODUCT, AS SUCH VARIATIONS IN COLOUR AND GRAIN ARE TO BE ACCEPTED. PLEASE NOTE THAT SUNLIGHT WILL ALSO INFLUENCE COLOUR VARIATION IN WOOD FLOORING.

Since wood is a material fashioned by nature, each board is unique and will vary in colour and grain characteristics. It will scratch, indent and change colour when exposed to UV light. May expand & contract due to local changes in temperature/climate.

Care for lac products

Lacquered hardwood floors are pretty much non-maintenance. They need to be swept over with a soft broom from time to time and occasionally wiped over with a lightly moistened mop or damp cloth. Use only professional flooring cleaner for normal cleaning and flooring can be taken care of with vacuuming or sweeping. A simple well wrung out mop on an occasional basis. Do not use soap, wax or polish since it will leave a layer of film behind, making the floor look greasy. As an added precaution, use felt pads under furniture legs, and pads or plastic wheels under chair legs. Always use a doormat in an entrance

Care for natural oiled products

For best appearance and also beauty of the wood flooring, we strongly recommend to put another coat of oil after installation.  For daily cleaning, use dry methods such as vacuuming. When necessary, damp-clean the floor with a well wrung-out floor mop. The floor must only become very slightly damp. The film of water formed in this way must dry within one minute. Do not allow spilt water to be left on the floor. The frequency of damp cleaning depends on how much the floor is used and how soiled it gets. Regularly cleaning the floor prevents dirt from adhering to the oiled surface. Unnecessary cleaning using damp methods do more harm than good. This applies particularly to the first few weeks after maintenance with an oil refresher. Scratches on oiled flooring tend to be less obvious and are also much easier to repair locally. A light sand, followed by the re-application of oil, will generally restore the appearance of the flooring without the need to re-finish the entire area.

Care for hard wax oiled products

Although hard wax oiled are much stronger and durable than natural oiled, we still recommend to use professional hard wax oil to re-oil and maintain the flooring every 12-18 months for residential use and 6 months for commercial use to keep the floor fresh and ensure the warranty won’t be compromised.
The floor must be cleaned with professional flooring cleaning products. Shake oil containers well before and during use. Apply the first coat thinly, thorough and evenly along wood grain using a microfiber roller or and spread well. Remove surplus.  Approx. 24 m2 with one coat per litre according to the coating manufacturer guidelines. Leave the oil to be absorbed and allow for good ventilation whilst drying for 8-10 hours. Low temperatures and/or higher air humidity can increase the drying time. When the Work in small areas one step at a time until the floor is finished. If necessary a second coat be applied same as per the first coat. After the coat fully dried, the floor needs to be full cleaned with professional flooring cleaning products.
